Child Custody

Child custody refers to the legal rights and responsibilities parents have for their children after a divorce or separation. In Washington State, custody decisions are based on what is in the child’s best interests, with a focus on stability, safety, and maintaining strong parent-child relationships.

There are two main types of custody: legal custody, which gives a parent the right to make major decisions about the child’s upbringing (such as their education, healthcare, and religion), and physical custody, which determines where the child lives. Custody can be joint (shared by both parents) or sole (granted to one parent).

Washington courts typically favor parenting plans that allow both parents to be involved, unless there are concerns about a child’s safety. If circumstances change, custody arrangements can be modified. Since custody cases can be complex, consulting a Seattle family law attorney can help parents understand their rights and the options available to them.
