Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party, called a mediator, helps divorcing or separating couples resolve disputes outside of court. In Washington State, mediation is commonly used for issues like child custody, parenting plans, property division, and spousal support.
Unlike a judge, a mediator does not make decisions but instead facilitates discussions to help both parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Mediation is often faster, less expensive, and less stressful than litigation, allowing couples to maintain more control over the outcome.
In many family law cases, Washington courts require mediation before a trial can take place, unless there are concerns like domestic violence. If an agreement is reached, it is put in writing and can be submitted to the court for approval.
Because mediation can have long-term legal and financial implications, it’s often helpful to have a family law attorney review any agreements before finalizing them. The Hemmat Law Group is highly experienced in mediation, offering two types of mediation services. Please contact us if you would like more information on how we can help you.
