Modification

Modification refers to a legal change to an existing court order, such as those related to child custody, child support, spousal support, or parenting plans. In Washington State, a modification can be requested when there has been a significant change in circumstances that affects the original agreement.

Common reasons for requesting a modification include a parent relocating, a change in income, a child’s evolving needs, or concerns about the child’s safety. For child support, modifications may be considered if there is a substantial shift in either parent’s financial situation.

To request a modification, the person seeking the change must file a petition with the court and provide evidence supporting the reasons why there is a need for an adjustment.

If both parties agree to the modification, the process is usually straightforward, but if there is a dispute, a judge will decide based on what is fair and in the best interests of the child. Consulting a Seattle family law attorney can help navigate this process effectively.
