Parental Rights

Parental rights refer to the legal rights and responsibilities that parents have regarding their children. These rights include making important decisions about a child’s education, healthcare, religion, and overall well-being. Parents also have the right to custody, visitation, and the ability to raise their child in a manner they see fit—unless it conflicts with the child’s best interests.

In Washington State, parental rights can be modified, limited, or even terminated in cases involving abuse, neglect, or other serious concerns. In adoption cases, a biological parent may voluntarily relinquish their parental rights, or a court may terminate them if it is determined to be in the child’s best interest.

Parental rights come with legal obligations, such as providing financial support and ensuring the child’s safety. If disputes arise—such as in custody battles or termination cases—a family law attorney can help parents understand and protect their rights.
